California 1-800 TAC Service Restored
1. 1-800 TAC Service within California (area codes 310, 510, 909, 209, 213,
408, 415, 619, 707, 805, 818, and 916) was re-established on 22 Oct 92.
Again, we regret the inconvenience caused by the temporary loss of service.
Please provide widest dissemination of service restoral.
2. DISA strongly recommends that any users who have determined they can use
local dial in service refrain from using the 1-800 service. There are three
excellent reasons for using the local dial in service. First, most local dial
in service is capable of supporting 2400 BPS service while the 1-800 service
is limited to 1200 BPS. Second, as of 1 Oct 92, 1-800 service costs $.17 per
minute of use, local dial in service costs $.07 per minute. Finally, there
are only twelve 1-800 circuits available to California users while there are
more than 150 local dial in circuits.
3. Any user that is unsure whether he/she has access to local dial in service
should contact the NIC at 1-800-365-3642 for assistance. Users can also find
local numbers by accessing the NIC computer (nic.ddn.mil, IP address
192.112.36.5) and using the TACNEWS LOCATOR option.
